Peaks looking better...

Here's the latest from David, one of our best team members:

Just got back in from the Peaks Trail and if's rideable. There are the few usually wet spots but decent.

GROUP RIDE TONIGHT!

Hey Everybody! Sorry about the short notice, but there is a group ride tonight up the Colorado Trail to Blair Witch. This will be nice set of trails to kick the summer group rides off, nothing very technical, a few small downed trees that can be rolled over on Blair Witch. Other than that it will be fun, fast, smooth single track. Meet here at 6:00pm and hopefully we'll roll out at about 6:20pm.

Along with the other rides scheduled below, this will be a no drop ride leaving from the Frisco Shop. We highly encourage all skill levels to join us.

Check back often, we'll post a reminder a few days before each ride with the details of what trails we'll be riding. Pass this on to all your friends, lets build this into a great ride by September!
Look forward to seeing ya here!

Cheers,
Andy

Tour de Trash - Great day for racing

Good weather, good friends, great racing.  Here's a couple of photo's I snapped while on the sidelines.

Thanks for racing and a shout out to Jacque Ball for placing 4th in her "First Ever" bike race.

Was able to ride the Peaks yesterday from Frisco up to the first rooty section after the flumes, with only one muddy section (about 10 ft long)--yeah. Gold Hill too muddy to ride, turned around. CO trail from Swan's Nest up to Blair Witch drying up nicely.

Race Weekend, Trail Updates, and Rain.

Hey everybody - just wanted to throw out an update.

Meghan and I are headed to Colorado Springs this weekend for the National Pro XCT Circuit race.  We leave tomorrow early for a quick spin on the course and openers before spectating the Professional Short Track race in the evening.  We both elected not to race the STXC in order to save legs for the Cross Country on Saturday.  Meghan starts at 8:00 a.m. for three laps of the 5 mile course.  She will be racing in the Junior Expert Women category.  I start in the Pro/Elite Men Category at 2:00.  We both wish we could be racing the Trash, but these bigger races are more important on the resumes.  Hope everyone has a great race!

As for the course...  I rode it today with my group of young superstars, and it is in very good shape.  It's tacky and fast this year - no dust! - but there are one or two extremely muddy sections that have never been a problem since I've raced at the dump.  The first is on the back stretch -- it's hard to miss, since the section has been so appropriately destroyed by our motorized cousins.  Picking a good line through this section may not be important for the time through the section, but later in the race, that fast line through the mud may hold some consequences on the bike.  My advice is to break trail and hit up the right grassy section.  The second section is at the bottom of the notorious Switchbacks... just a short section of wetness, nothing to complain about.  Other than that, as I said, the course is in spectacular shape.

Trail Updates:

West Ridge - Dry to Red's Trail cutoff, Red's Trail probably still wet.

Colorado Tr. in general - wet sections throughout.

Flume Trails Breck - bone dry

Gold Run course - dry except for some sections in Toxic Forest and the bottom of Heinous.

French Gulch Singletracks (X10U8, Minnie Mine, etc.) - Mostly Dry.

Various roads in the Golden Triangle - ranging from very dry to VERY wet, depending on N. or S. Slope and runoff areas.

F. Peninsula - dry.

Oro Grande - As dry as usual.

Straight Creek - Dry to the junior course finish of a couple years ago's race (before the water crossing).

... and last but not least... what the hell is up with this rain?

Trail Updates

Gold Hill:  Muddy and Wet - Wouldn't try it again for a couple of weeks.

Peaks:  Frisco to Breck - Once again too wet to ride without tearing things up.

Tiger Run up the Colorado to the Sign post:  Dry with a little wet spot here and there.

Blair Witch:  Dry and fast.

That's all I've got for now.  More to come if it ever stops raining.

Frisco race support

Here's a few photo's I snapped at the race last Wednesday.  I hope to get some better support photo's at the next couple of races.  Thanks Phil and Andy for helping people out with their last minute needs.

Team WS wins Frisco Roundup!

Congratulations to Team Wilderness Sports for winning the Frisco Roundup, the first race of the season in the Summit Mountain Challenge. These riders all took first in their categories: Cat Bywaters, Kevin Kane, David Overstreet, Colleen Ihnken, and Mark Thompson. Way to go!

We also had these top-5 finishers in their respective categories: 2nd, Roger Cox; 3rd, Kristin Schwarck and Mark Cowan; 4th, Brad Grohusky and Dennis Kaiser.

Peaks Trail Not Ready

Got on the first part of the Peaks Trail today, Frisco end, and it is definitely too wet to ride unless you are very conscientious about getting off your bike and walking through mud puddles every few hundred yards. As always, people have been riding around the mud, creating braiding and making this "single track" wider and wider. Don't do it!

If it stops raining Peaks should be ready in a week or two. But not yet. If you need that single-track fix, hit the Peninsula or head for the Front Range (Evergreen Trails are AWESOME!).

Welcome

Welcome to the Wilderness Sports blog. We want to know what you've been up to, where you like to ride, and what the trail conditions are like in Summit County, so make comments or drop us an email and we'll post your observations.

This photo is compliments of Yeti Cycles, one of the cool bike brands we carry. The other major brand we feature is Specialized.

We have about 40 years of combined experience in the shop working on bikes, plus a certified BG FIT specialist who can make sure all the angles and tube lengths are right for your particular riding style. Drop us a note, check out the website, or come on in. We're ready to ride!
